Firefighter returns to work after neck injury
Derek Avilez took a big step Monday, surrounded by fellow firefighters as he reached for his helmet for the first time in nearly two years.
In September 2010, Avilez broke his neck during a skim board accident. Doctors said he would never walk again and would have to be on a respirator.
But after more than a year of rehab, this firefighter is defying odds.
"He's been a big source of inspiration for all of us," said Hollywood Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez.
Avilez will start on light duty but said his new office is just temporary and plans to be back fighting fires soon.
"Go off to the truck when they tell me go out -- that's what I am looking forward to, getting back out there with my brothers and sisters doing what I love doing," said Avilez.
Avilez said his next goal is to walk without help.
